That's Life

I was listening to Rick & Bubba this morning after I dropped Scout off for his Atlanta Conference and Mission Trip. Those two always seem to have something interesting to talk about. Part of today's show was on kids and the World Series of Baseball for kids. The question was raised as to why there are so many different world series competitions. For some reason the state of our culture is to make everyone feel better now….let everyone go to the World Series if they want to….even if they didn’t earn it. It may sound harsh…but it really is true.

No longer do we have kids playing ‘competitive games’ during play time at school. Now, the 15 to 20 minutes that they have true play time is planned for ‘group’ fair play. We don’t ever want to make anyone feel bad. But when we leave school and enter the real world…..who makes sure we have the ‘fair play’ then? I think we can all say that it is quite competitive when we are out their on our own. I like what Paul from the Bible said about running the race.

I Corinthians 9:23 - 25
I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever

Life is a race and that means….eventually you win, or lose.

Here is a fun email that I got from my uncle not too long ago. Funny…but true reminders of how our times have changed. Maybe we all need to be old school with our kids more. I am finding this to be true with my oldest. He is baffled that we actually want him to apply for a job at a grocery store. Not what he has in mind as a first job. I remember my first job – Showtime Pizza. Not glamorous at all...but at least I had a job. Nick is finding that $20 doesn’t fill the tank for too long. He’ll get it soon. Alright….enjoy the list!

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem! . The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
